The Spirit’s Witness

We have had recent discussions here on the site about our responsibility to spread the love of God through our witness.  Those discussions and an incident that happened at the gym a few days ago started my consideration of ways that we provide witness to the world around us.  Then this morning John 7:38 was today’s scripture reading.  The verse itself sparked my interest immediately but I wanted more of the context so I read from the verse before to the verse after:

John 7:37-39 (NIRV) 37

It was the last and most important day of the Feast. Jesus stood up and spoke in a loud voice. He said, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Does anyone believe in me? Then, just as Scripture says, streams of living water will flow from inside him.” When he said this, he meant the Holy Spirit. Those who believed in Jesus would receive the Spirit later. Up to that time, the Spirit had not been given. This was because Jesus had not yet received glory

Let me relate my experience at the gym this week and then I will comment on what I’m getting from the above passage.

I’ve had some severe shoulder issues due to arteritis and inflammation in the upper shoulder joint (acromioclavicular).  I’ve been treating it for over six months and just recently have been seeing greater and greater mobility with the shoulder.  As a result my exercise has been limited to lower body so cardio has been primarily the recumbent bike or treadmill. But with the improvement this week I felt it strong enough to move to my favorite cardio exercise the elliptical machine.

To my joy, I found that the arm motions of the elliptical machine were not causing pain in my shoulder so I turned up my playlist of songs from worship and my favorite contemporary Christian songs and settled in for a 40 minute cardio session.

One of the members on a treadmill beside my elliptical machine stopped me and asked me what I was listening to because the joy was radiating from my face as I was working out. Case in point…. ‘Streams of living water will flow from inside him’.

When we drink from the living water provided by Jesus and ‘believe’ in him then everyone around us can and will see the spirit flow through us.  Radiating the world around us and bearing witness to God’s love for man.  It even works in the middle of a grueling forty minute workout. It works when we are in the checkout line at the grocery. It works everywhere we go and in everything we do while in the influence of the Holy Spirit in our day to day lives.

If you were not smiling before, grasping this truth should do the trick.  What a blessing.  What a gift. The light that cannot be extinguished.
