Run with Endurance! – 5/11/18

Run with Endurance!!!…

Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (HCSB)

All bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.

Ephesians 4:31-32 (HCSB)

Note from Kip…
It is part of our carnal nature to ‘put a positive spin’ on things as best we can. After all, why should I make it hard on myself, when if I simply provide part of the message, it will sound better and be so much easier for ‘me’ to deal with?

We call this spin. Sharing only the parts that suit our tastes or appeals to the larger audience.

We do it a lot with scripture!  A prime example is the one here which typically is quoted just using the 32rd verse and leaves out the 31st.

Then all that God asks of us is to kind, compassionate, and forgiving. Oh dear! Do you think if we removed that last part of verse 32 anyone would notice? After all, while this list seems doable and even desirable, if we are expected to do these thing ‘Just as God’ forgave us through Christ Jesus, that raises the bar considerably!

Alas, no you can’t trim it out in this case, because it would be obvious that something was missing. So perhaps we simply let it roll off the tongue giving emphasis to the three elements we wish to highlight and roll past quietly those performance requirements.

See how this works?

So, what was in that 31st verse anyhow?

All bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander must be removed from you, along with all malice.

All Bitterness? All anger? All wrath, shouting and slander? Oh and while we are at it all malice too?

Is it any wonder we might avoid the 31st verse and just deal with that do like Jesus thing in the 32nd?  God you are asking a LOT of me!

To which God will reply, ‘I asked more of my Son, to redeem you!’

Forget the spin.  Lay claim to these instructions and Hebrews 12:1-2 tells us run with ‘endurance’ the race before us, for we are God’s champions

Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck. I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep waters, and a flood sweeps over me.

I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.

Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay. God, You know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from You.

Do not let those who put their hope in You be disgraced because of me, Lord God of Hosts; do not let those who seek You be humiliated because of me, God of Israel.

Psalms 69:1-6 (HCSB)

A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man holds it in check.

Proverbs 29:11 (HCSB)

And they sang a new song: You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because You were slaughtered, and You redeemed people for God by Your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation.

Revelation 5:9 (HCSB)

Each person should do as he has decided in his heart — not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:7-8 (HCSB)

But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them shout for joy forever.
May You shelter them, and may those who love Your name boast about You.
For You, Lord, bless the righteous one; You surround him with favor like a shield.

Psalms 5:11-12 (HCSB)

Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days.

Psalms 90:14 (HCSB)
