Gifts of God! – 6/28/18

Gifts of God!

Therefore, I remind you to keep ablaze the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.

2 Timothy 1:6-7 (HCSB)

Note from Kip…
This morning I am remembering a hymn we sang on a regular basis when I was a young boy; Count Your Blessings!

When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings, see what God has done.

Speaking for myself, I find that our enemy the Devil, prefers to attack on two fronts.

The first one is so easy to see yet difficult to suppress; self worship. I’m not talking about getting down on my knees to pay homage to me, but this one creeps into our lives often innocently, but is malicious. The warning sign is when we find ourself thinking or saying words like “I”, “Me”, and “My”. Because, in these words our focus momentarily shifts from being locked on Jesus, to ourselves.

If we remain focused on ourselves then we no longer are focused on Jesus and immediately Satan has successfully driven an ever so small wedge between us and our Lord.

It’s easy to see because of the warning signs, but our flesh is constantly wanting to be gratified so when we change that focus it is our flesh that says, “That’s what I’m talking about!”

This is so pervasive that I consider ‘Self’ to be the biggest Anti-Christ of our time. There isn’t a believer out there that the enemy will not use this to attack us and weaken our resolve.

But the other is minimizing God’s influence and blessing in our lives.  The numerous gifts that He pours out on us constantly, such as the gifts of the Spirit.

Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different activities, but the same God activates each gift in each person. A demonstration of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial:

to one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit,
to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit,
to another, faith by the same Spirit,
to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
to another, the performing of miracles,
to another, prophecy,
to another, distinguishing between spirits,
to another, different kinds of languages,
to another, interpretation of languages.

But one and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each person as He wills.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 (HCSB)

Then the gifts of righteousness.

Since by the one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive the overflow of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:17 (HCSB)

God gave us His Son; Jesus. We are blessed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. And on and on it goes. A fun thing to do is just search your online Bibles for the word gift and see where it takes you. From Genesis to Revelation you’ll see God giving and giving again, one blessing after another.

Once you’re done with that step back and examine the world around you and even when in the most dire of circumstances, we have so much bestowed on us that the enemy would seek to diminish.

Is it any wonder that Paul told the Thessalonians:

Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (HCSB)

It is the will of Jesus Christ that we give thanks for every blessing He piles on us. Giving us a reason to always be Re-Joy-cing. Refilling ourselves with His Joy!

Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your many blessings, see what God has done!
