For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.

Note from Kip…
I am always amazed at How the Lord provides these devotionals. This one He literally moved the heavens to make it happen.
Yesterday afternoon, shortly after lunch time, the Skys darkened over central Alabama and as memory serves me the fiercest thunderstorm of the season so far defended on the area in and around Birmingham Alabama.
Winds were report upwards of 70 plus miles per hour and the rain fell in torrents as lightening blots crashed to earth from the sky. Then for thousands of homes, there was darkness.
Power was lost!
Before leaving work I knew we had lost power at the our home in Alabaster, AL. I knew this because when I called the house, I was informed by the message that our voice mail was not configured. Since we don’t use the phone services answering system, I knew that that meant that the electricity was gone.
I tried calling the cell for my wife, but no answer. This wasn’t all that shocking as she isn’t a one who relies much on her cell phone. It often is laying dead on a table in the house pleading for some power of it’s own. It is frequently sitting on the charger while she is out and about where it could prove useful. Needless to say, she’s not overly attached to her mobile device as some people we will not mention seem to be.
This story could go on and on as we never had the power come back on all night long. Thank God for battery operated, computers, tablets, and cell phones, because were it not from them the isolation, might have been crushing. As it was the power outage was more of an inconvenience than a real problem.
We drove to Beef O Brady’s for supper. They had power. And we did too, the power of prayer as the waitress brought us our meal, we asked if we could pray for her and she smiled and said sure and immediately stood straight and closed her eyes. We prayed!
When I bill came at the end of the meal the power of prayer, kindness, and love had obviously impacted our server as scribbled on the bill was “God Bless”, along with a bright smiley face drawn beneath it with her name.
We had power. It simply wasn’t the power that the world is familiar with.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8 (HCSB)
The thought of this both amused and comforted me as we departed the restaurant.
Once back home, it was immediately obvious that there had been no restoration of the man made power at the house. But, it didn’t really bother me as I had all the power I really needed!
He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a lightning flash. Look, I have given you the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will ever harm you.”
Luke 10:18-19 (HCSB)
The power of man, earthly power, is fickle and in no way can measure up to the power of God, he pours out on us constantly when we trust in Him.
There simply isn’t anything, not even The Incredibles, that can come close to what He provides to us constantly, everyday, all day; if we only allow Him to. That is real power.
For I didn’t think it was a good idea to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I came to you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom but with a powerful demonstration by the Spirit, so that your faith might not be based on men’s wisdom but on God’s power.
1 Corinthians 2:2-5 (HCSB)
Jesus Christ! And Him crucified! This is power that we can rely on in the middle of the storms of life and when things are going well. The weather conditions are inconsequential to our Lord and they should be to us as well.
As a matter of fact, with God’s power in us, nothing can deter us from His mission for our lives. Without God’s power no other power can sustain or may we place our hope on. His is the power for life now and forever more!
I always get up before anyone else in the house, this morning was no different.
Sure enough, Alabama Power hadn’t come through yet. The house was dark except for my flashlight and a candle that had be placed in the bathroom as a night light.
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)
I got cleaned up. Shaved my face and my head. Then I got dressed. I thought that I had managed to make it out of the bedroom without waking my wife when I heard this sleepy voice ask, “Still no power”?
To which I replied, “Only the power of Christ in this house!”
