The Spirit of power, love, and self-discipline!
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
Note from kip…
There really shouldn’t be any such thing as a wimpy Christian. On the contrary, God has no intent on us being withdrawn, or fearful in our day to day lives.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name
John 1:12 (KJV)
Not wimpy at all.
For a moment stop and ponder what these two passages mean to us as believers.
As one who trusts in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior…
Children of the King
We are no longer just ‘that guy’ or ‘that girl’, we are children of God. How would the children of a king conduct themselves? Does this reflect in your presence?
When the time came to completion, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “ Abba, Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
Galatians 4:4-7 (HCSB)
Our dear loving Daddy God! Our Father! His children, far from the timidity and disgrace of the flesh.
We have been given God’s Spirit and with that comes a bounty of things that transform us from the insignificant drone of the world, into a beloved champion of God’s Grace.
We have power that is to be projected, power to resist, power to stand our position in the spiritual battle we are pitted against an enemy who has already lost the war. He is nothing, when we have vested our faith in Him who is everything!
This power is not restrained, for with the dwelling of the Spirit in us, the constraint of self-discipline is part of what God’s given us. Self-discipline isn’t getting up in the morning and having your devotional time. It isn’t attending your church and worship. Self-discipline becomes evident when we are faced with that which the flesh draws us to and yet we muster the brut force from within us to push away and repel it.
Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.
Hebrews 12:1-2 (HCSB)
That is not you, that is the Holy Spirit acting in you. Compelling you to drive beyond the flesh and live in the Spirit. This is the Spirit enable Christian!
Imbued with love. Allowing the Spirit control produces an irresistible love. Yes we feel that love in us, we extend that love around us like a net taking in every single person in our reach.
It’s not us. It’s Him. It’s His love filling us. Implanting compassion, kindness, and grace, so that we can extend it to others.
“You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”
Matthew 5:43-45 (HCSB)
So that you may be sons of your Father in heaven! It’s part of being a child of the King.
Not just can. We must! It is impossible to resist the desire to extend His Love and Grace to others; not if we are living in the Spirit.
So, why is it we find ourselves withdrawn from the conversation when it turns to something spiritual? Why do we avoid conversations with people who may just be looking for a messenger, delivering Good News? Why do we construct excuse after excuse, in order to justify why we can’t; when we know we can, because God says we can? Afraid of what people will think? Fearful of what they might do?
Back again to the beginning. That is not the Spirit imbued in us. That sounds an awful lot like the spirit of fear and timidity. If it’s not God putting that in you, then where did it come from?
You have the power. You have the self-discipline. With His Spirit you certainly have His Love. There is nothing to hold you back. Celebrate real freedom today on this fourth day of July. Celebrate it by yielding to God’s Spirit inside you, that wants to see you thriving in the power that only God can supply.
Real freedom. Independent of sins entanglement. Good News to be shared with the world! The day of Salvation IS OUR Independence Day!
