– God’s power sustaining and guiding human destiny-

But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 (NIV)

Note from Kip…
It seems to me, that I must be reminded on a regular basis just how very marvelous God is. There have been no fewer than three times since Monday that He’s blessed me with that assurance. The most recent this morning as I was into 2 Samuel where preceding that God had his hand on David despite the fervent desire of Saul to put an end to Him.

David was exalted as King following Sauls death, and though opportunity had presented itself time and again, where if David had not respected the hand of the Lord that he could have slain the one who was sworn to kill him. But because Saul was the anointed one, David refused.

God honored David as a result. Upon Sauls death in his final battle, the kingdom was handed over to David.

Providence was on David. He knew it, those around him were well aware of it. Yet later the same God fearing David took another man’s wife, killed her husband to cover up his sin, then married her.

God punished David for this. The child that she carried became sick and despite David’s fasting and praying, the Lord took the child as a punishment to David.

Through this David clearly understood what he had done wrong. He accepted the Lord’s judgment on David without so much as a whimper. Upon the death of the child, the scripture tells us that David gave praise to the Lord.

David, a man who understood Providence. He’d seen it time and time again with Sauls relentless attempts to kill him. David saw it as he was raised up to be King over all of Israel.  He also saw it as God punished him for his disobedience.

Webster defines it as God’s power sustaining and guiding human destiny.

This isn’t too far off because indeed God does guide the destiny of humanity. He exercises His will on the just and the unjust.

“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.”

Matthew 5:43-45 (NLT)

There simply isn’t anything that He doesn’t exercise His will over if He chooses too.

Our God is in heaven and does whatever He pleases.

Psalms 115:3 (HCSB)

Of course those who are His, we can see, we can hear, we can feel his presence in our lives day in and day out.  But not unlike David, despite the manifestations of His Grace and Providence in our lives, we require reminders.

So that we may see. So that we may hear. So that we can reach out and touch the very hand of the one who loves us so that He literally shook Heaven and earth to established an eternal bond with us.

A lot like David

Yes, I, we are a lot like that shepherd boy who became king. He raised David up and he does us as well.

God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.

1 Corinthians 6:14 (HCSB)

By His power, even though we were dead in our sin, He raised us to new life in Him.  Through His power, He then provides and directs our steps in the path He chooses. He does so for His Glory, but he also does so because He loves us.

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.

For He knows what we are made of, remembering that we are dust.

As for man, his days are like grass — he blooms like a flower of the field; when the wind passes over it, it vanishes, and its place is no longer known. But from eternity to eternity the Lord’s faithful love is toward those who fear Him, and His righteousness toward the grandchildren of those who keep His covenant, who remember to observe His precepts.

Psalms 103:13-18 (HCSB)

Great is the Lord our God!  He is to be exalted in the sunshine or the rain. Let’s strive to move beyond the point where we constantly need to be reminded of His Love, His Grace, and His Providence in our lives. Let us be mindful of these things constantly and make sure that He hears us tell Him so.

Great is thy faithfulness oh God my father
there is no shadow of turning with thee
thou changeth not
thou compassions they fail not
as thou hath been
Thou forever willth be

Great is thy faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness
morning by morning new mercies i see
All i have needed of Thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness Lord unto me

Providence: God’s power sustaining and guiding human destiny.

How it is so obvious to those who seek to follow Him, if we will only look, listen, and reach out to touch His hand. Let us be constantly mindful of this as was David.

“Come, everyone who is thirsty, come to the waters; and you without money, come, buy, and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost!

Why do you spend money on what is not food, and your wages on what does not satisfy?

Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and you will enjoy the choicest of foods. Pay attention and come to Me;listen, so that you will live.

I will make an everlasting covenant with you, the promises assured to David.

Isaiah 55:1-3 (HCSB)
