Temple Maintenance – August 12th, 2018

Temple Maintenance

It says in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit. Some take this as a call for physical fitness and health, but I would contend that to do so, takes a narrow view of scripture.

Note from Kip…

God’s focus tends to be exact yes, but if you’ve noticed, everything He does, says, and calls for is normally very holistic in it’s direction.

We all often take comfort in Jeremiah 29:11 when God told His Children in bondage to have hope because He has plans specifically designed for them.

For I know the plans I have for you” — this is the Lord’s declaration — “plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11 (HCSB)

How often we tend to want to limit our understanding of both God’s power and wisdom, and tell ourselves God’s too consumed with everything else to be focused on this issue before us. What we are saying when we take that position is that He is limited, not powerful enough, not wise enough and can’t multitask.

He invented multitasking so give it a rest.

So when we see this:

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

I am absolutely sure that God’s talking about both our physical and spiritual bodies as well as our minds for good measure.  His intent is that we be the steward of ‘us’. Not only the physical part, but the spirit and the mind as well. In other words, take the holistic approach that God embraces and consider everything about us, because this is where His Spirit lives, in us, communing with our spirit. Sharing and nurturing the very spirit that He placed in us.

What this means is that we pay attention to the body.

Instead, I discipline my body and bring it under strict control, so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

1 Corinthians 9:27 (HCSB)

Demanding performance out of what God has given us in the physical area of ‘us’.

We need to pay heed to the the. spirit in us by supplying it with ample feedings of the Word of God!

Your words were found, and I ate them. Your words became a delight to me and the joy of my heart, for I am called by Your name, Yahweh God of Hosts.

Jeremiah 15:16 (HCSB)

And finally we need to apply that Word of God to our hearts and minds to transform our minds.

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:2 (HCSB)

When we apply God’s holistic approach to the care of His Temple, our body, we are more in alignment with His plans, desires, and call for us. To do less, is in effect either doubting God’s power and ability, or shows a failure for us to be willing to fully answer the call to which He gives us.

Be blessed as you maintain your temple!
