Surrender Equals Peace!
This is a totally foreign concept to the world. The world would have us believe that you can only be assured peace if your side wins the war. The entire concept of ‘peace through strength’ is based on the premise that if we build up our forces, to such an incredible power that we will not be challenged by the enemy and the resulting effect is that we will have peace.
It may sound reasonable, but it is not the way to true living peace. Lets look into this.
Note from Kip…
While the ‘Reagan Doctrine’ may be credited with allowing the USA from falling into military conflict with the former USSR, that wasn’t real peace. In the years that ensued the men and women of the US military were called on time and time again to repel a vast array of evil in the world. Peace through strength while effective in some respect was an ultimate failure if its core objective was true peace.
Where is True Peace?
True peace isn’t something that you can force upon a situation. True peace comes from outside the situation. In addition to that, true peace comes from surrender not a military triumph.
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful.”
John 14:27 (HCSB)
True peace can only be found in being in complete alignment with the will of God. All other definitions of peace are only poorly formed depictions of true peace. They may carry some resemblance in one way or another, but they always will fail to encompass the impact of true peace in a life that has surrendered itself to the will of God.
I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”
John 16:33 (HCSB)
Jesus had just told his Disciples that they would be scattered due to conflict and persecution, but he wanted to have them abide in peace. There will be suffering He says, but have peace and be courageous because I (Jesus) has conquered the world!
I a radical departure from ‘peace through strength’, isn’t it?
Living in Peace
Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
Colossians 3:14-15 (NLT)
There is a lot of meat to chew on in that passage.
First we are reminded of the most prominent and enduring attribute of God, Love. This isn’t just a hug around the neck or a kiss on the cheek kind of love. No, the word used here is agape. In other words, Sacrificial love of God love in the form of a noun.
It’s not an action, it is a thing. The thing is God. God is love, the two are inseparable.
The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:8 (HCSB)
It’s important to note here that these two passages use the exact same reference to love, agape. Thus God doesn’t ‘do’ love. God ‘is’ love! Love in it’s highest and purest form.
Back to our scripture in Colossians.
So we are to drape ourselves God (remember God = Love). This binds the faithful together in harmony.
Then we are to allow the peace that comes from Jesus Christ rule us.
I have to chuckle a bit to myself because John squeezed in at the very end, ‘be thankful’. How could we not possibly be thankful for this? Sadly we often times are not.
God is Love. Peace comes through Jesus.
How Do We Secure Peace
Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.
Romans 5:1 (NLT)
‘Since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith‘. Where does this faith come from?
We have to seek that faith.
Now without faith it is impossible to please God, for the one who draws near to Him must believe that He exists and rewards those who seek Him.
Hebrews 11:6 (HCSB)
This requires full and complete surrender of self to Jesus.
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
Romans 12:1 (NLT)
This is truly the way to worship Him.
There is only one way to true peace. It is through Jesus Christ and our unconditional surrender to Him. Therefore, surrender equals peace, true peace!
