The Audacity of a Disciple – August 22, 2018

The Audacity of a Disciple!

It’s not found anywhere in scripture that we are to be ‘Jesus Lite’.  We are to be ‘Jesus Like’. The Disciple seeks to be molded in the form of the Master.  This in itself is a bold departure from our current state. But if we are to be His Disciples we will adopt for ourselves that audacity of being unparalleled to the world around us. This calls for Audacity!

Note from Kip…

Audacity isn’t something we might normally associate with being a follower of Jesus. I’m not going to repost here the full definition of the word and all of its associated synonyms. There are many. As I was looking at it I saw with each different synonym how it applies to the Disciple of Jesus.

When I hear the word ‘audacity’ I immediately think of ‘boldness’ that boarders on brash, aggressive, unapologetic, nonconforming and deliberate. Tempered with an agenda that is focused on a goal.

The Audacity of a Disciple

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20 (NLT)

Take the concept of audacity and now couple that with the directive provided by Jesus in the Great Commission and consider just what a powerful force we have to consider.

Jesus stated unequivocally that He had been given ‘all authority in heaven and on earth’, the place that is often thought of by many as the domain of the devil himself, Satan’s playground.

Jesus is saying, ‘I’ve been given this authority over all, now I pass that authority to you and what I want you to do with it is to boldly go where no Gospel has ever gone before!’. Go and make disciples of all the nations!

Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time.

Hebrews 4:16 (HCSB)

If we are told to approach the throne of grace with boldness, how does that pair with a testimony of timidity? It doesn’t wash Christian! We can not pursue a  wimpy walk through the world,  then pull up our Huggies disposable diapers, to go strutting into the thrown room of God with boldness.  It doesn’t work that way.

This boldness contained in us coming before the throne is based on the preparation and willingness, and audacity to take on the world fully equipped with the armor of God, to do what? Make a good show at the throne room then blend in when we head out to the battle front? I think not.

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.

Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Ephesians 6:13-18 (NLT)

We are not instructed to put on the full armor of God because we are going to go along, to get along.

We have this because it is the Lord’s intent that we are to be in opposition with the corruption of the world not in compliance with it!

It’s not going to be a picnic out there. The devil has every intent to do his best to take us out with those fiery arrows, use that shield of faith to deny him any advance.

The shoes of righteousness that permit us to walk with dogged determination through the muck an mire of the world thrusting the Sword of Spirit, the very living Word of God.

Just a little audacity I would think.

What Paul was painting an image of is us as Disciples of Christ, fully equipped with the armor of God boldly coming to the throne room, reporting in, getting our orders and then rushing out with enthusiasm and empowered by His Grace, to stand out. Presenting the Good News that the enemy would rather suppress in an environment where he has thus far successfully blinded the masses.

Will they know we are different? You bet they will, be cause we’ll stand out. They will immediately begin to contrast what the see in us in what they see in themselves. As a result, we will become either a messenger of truth to them, or an encumbrance to their culture and nature.

If we have the audacity to do what we are called to do, and behave as God calls us to behave, love as Jesus loves and exhibit the grace bestowed on us, there is no way we will blend in.

They will know we are different and much of the time, hate us in the process, because of that difference. But that doesn’t matter because at the end of the day, we’ll come charging back to the throne room to report on what was accomplished in His name.

We’ve not been given the testimony of timidity. We’ve been charged with conforming to the image of Christ not adopting the practices of the world.

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:2 (HCSB)

We are going to need to be different. We must have the audacity to challenge the thinking of the world, and to show clearly the life changing difference that is infused in us through the Grace of our Lord.

My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be My disciples.

John 15:8 (HCSB)

It is by this contrast that they will understand that there is a different way than that which the world imposes on them day by day. A way that leads to life everlasting and a relationship with the creator that is unparalleled to any in human form.

Let’s prove to be His Disciples. Let’s have the audacity of a disciple!
