Fellowship – September 10th, 2018

I was reviewing some pictures I took yesterday of our church picnic in the park in Helena and ran across the one above. This was taken after we all had eaten and were sitting around talking with each other. I noticed something that is critical to our spiritual health.

Let’s talk about Fellowship…

Note from Kip…

What perhaps struck me the most in this photo was everyone is engaged and focused one another. What was taking place was the functioning of the the Body of Christ.

It didn’t require a grand mission at all, it just required us getting together. We had left the church about 11:30 after our worship service. The plan was to meet at the park at 12:30 for lunch and bring a passing dish. If you didn’t have one, come on anyhow as we knew there would be ample food and ‘fellowship’.

What you can’t really see from the picture but you can almost feel is the Holy Spirit interacting with itself in each person. The engagement you see here isn’t  a result of innate self-interest, it comes from a deep desire to share in the life of the other.

This could be dismissed as nothing more than just some people of common interest sharing that interest together, but it was much more than that and as you listened in on the conversations, they spread over broad spectrum of topics.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

Acts 2:42 (CSB)

Yesterday we saw our small congregation experience what the early church in Acts did, We spent the morning in worship, teaching and learning from the Word of God. Then as we were dismissed from worship we made our way to the park and there the fellowship continued with the sharing of a meal together and the food of the spirit which is that very fellowship.

Every time we find ourself with another follower of Jesus Christ we can feel the Spirit in them in communes with ours. When these gatherings are shared among more followers, that effect is amplified.

Unlike finding ourselves lost in a crowd, the unity of the Spirit bonds together the fellowship of believers.

Jesus told us that whenever we get together with other disciples of His that He is with us.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there among them.”

Matthew 18:20 (CSB)

If you look again at the picture at the top of this article you see another face in the image. You see the face of Christ.

For we as believers are the Body of Christ and just like our fleshly bodies, when every component of that body is working together the body is stronger, functions better and in general is healthier than if those parts are separated.

And let us watch out for one another to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (CSB)

Provoking – Love and Good Works

That’s what it is all about isn’t it? When we join in fellowship together we are provoking love and good works in all of us.

We are bound by a common interest to be certain, that is to follow after our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. The assembly of believers fosters our desire to do that which is good and pure.

There’s something else in that picture in the opening and that is love. I see a lot of love. I saw a lot of sharing. We shared a most beautiful fellowship together.

In the park.

With Jesus…

… And each other!
