Living in Babylon Today

The modern City of Babylon. Where is it? Who lives there? What to understand about history repeating itself.

Read on…

Note from Kip,

First off, let me assure you that I’m not an ancient historian, nor am I prepared now, or likely any time in the near or distant future to assert a claim of complete understanding of the city nor God’s response to mankind’s braggadocious engagement in folly in the face of the Creator.

They said to each other, “Come, let us make oven-fired bricks.” (They used brick for stone and asphalt for mortar.) And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered throughout the earth.”

Then the Lord came down to look over the city and the tower that the humans were building.

The Lord said, “If they have begun to do this as one people all having the same language, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let’s go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

So from there the Lord scattered them throughout the earth, and they stopped building the city. Therefore it is called Babylon, for there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the Lord scattered them throughout the earth.

Genesis 11:3-9 (CSB)

The story in the eleventh chapter of Genesis is well known, but oddly enough you do not hear a lot of commentary on the event where God purposefully intervenes in the activity of mankind to inhibit their ‘progress’.

He has, He does, and He will do exactly that if He so chooses. This story serves as a prime example of it.

Of course, unlike this recorded interaction between God and mankind wrote in the book of Genesis, we tend to attempt to rationalize away His involvement in life since then up to today.  Many seriously doubt that He will act in the future as well.

What took place in this record was nothing short of ‘Father God’ seeing that his creation had gotten a bit too big for their britches. I don’t believe for a moment that He was intimidated by the tower nor the fact that they were constructing it. What I do believe is that we had completely forgotten who we were and who God is. As a result, God took it upon Himself to take us down a notch or two.

Confusion spread like wildfire. Instantaneously, the guy next to you started ‘babbling’ nonsense that was beyond annoying. It was difficult if not impossible to carry on a conversation, let alone continue building the tower and the town.

It’s a bit interesting as well the fact that God didn’t do anything to tear it down, it was Alexander the Great had it demolished about 331 BC.

There is a bit of controversy over just what God’s reason was for the intervention, but it is clear that God felt that mankind had overstepped the boundaries and needed to have a reset.

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Matthew 23:12 (CSB)

God had already wiped out humanity with the flood. He also made a promise to not do that again. Therefore this was the second reset He imposed on humanity.

The example I want to draw from this story is this, God is in control, as soon as mankind believes otherwise God is likely and able to make an adjustment to keep things within the parameters He’s established.

Modern Babylon

Civilization spread, with it, so did the spirit of Babylon. Today everywhere you look you see that mankind has as in the day of the great tower built up a testament to his own devices and this time it’s not just to circumvent God, but to supersede God.

We’ve built our share of tall buildings, highways, infrastructure, and inventions of every type. Our monuments to our own achievements have reached beyond the sky and into space where yet more devices echo back to us details of creation that we never had the opportunity to be aware of through observation, only hinted to by the documentation provided from the creator to us, His Word.

Last week I heard a news report that scientists have now created a computer model of life itself.

Quoting from an article found on Digitial Trends,

“The work was achieved by researchers from the University of the Basque Country in Spain. With the aid of an IBM QX4 quantum computer, they created tiny simulated life forms capable of carrying out many of the behaviors seen in real-world life forms — including reproduction, mutation, evolution, and death.”

If you’d like to read the full article click on the ‘Digital Trends’ link above.

I found it interesting that the behaviors they list are consistent with the Evolutional theory of life, in their model. They chose to leave the possibility of God out of the picture entirely in their attempt to duplicate the very thing that God is responsible for.

This does sound a little Babylonish does it not?

I cannot say if God is planning to intervene by knocking a few rungs off our ladder again, but I will note that there has been something happen of late that is remarkable and yet similar to what took place with the language difficulty experienced as they constructed the Tower of Babble.

My observation is that despite constantly updated dictionaries and lexicons, words no longer have the same meaning for people. Depending on the political, social, or generational reference any given word may be subjected to an ad-hoc definition that may be totally counter to its original meaning or even something entirely different that has no association whatsoever with the original meaning.

I’m not referring to the seemingly natural evolution (there is that term again) of a world from an original meaning that changes over time. No, what is observed today is much more divisive in nature where a word with established meaning is used in a context that appears to be totally foreign to its nomenclature but a certain segment of the population insists that it means something that counters or is totally different than the rest of us.

These two or more meaning co-exist in the same space/time as valid usage of the words as if instantly a new homonym has been established out of thin air.

This practice has become commonplace among the educated masses today. So much so that I often wonder if this is yet again the Lord God collectively knocking us down a peg or two.

Babylon Manifested

Where this has really become prevalent is in our churches today.  This should be a warning to each and every believer that you cannot take as Gospel the message being taught by many churches and supposed ‘Christian teachers’.

Many are extremely popular movements with numerous campuses across the globe and dress up their anti-gospel with slick attractive music to draw in the masses.

The Word has changed it’s meaning in their Bibles and what they preach and teach is a subversion of the truth, The Good News. From their bases of operation, the lead astray millions of those who have good intentions to become a part of their deception.

But we knew it would come to this.

I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book. And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share of the tree of life and the holy city, which are written about in this book.

Revelation 22:18-19 (CSB)

It was bound to happen because it is part of the plan.

For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 (CSB)

They will be known by their fruit.

“Be on your guard against false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves. You’ll recognize them by their fruit. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can’t produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So you’ll recognize them by their fruit.

Matthew 7:15-20 (CSB)

Even the elect will be deceived.

For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. Take note: I have told you in advance.

Matthew 24:24-25 (CSB)

A Sign of the Times

I’m not big on the end times.  I believe we have a mission here today, now.  That mission should be our top priority, so as a result, I have an interest in God’s prophecy of the future events and end times, but I’m not preoccupied with it.

I do believe that what we see taking place today tells us more and more each and every day that our time is short and the task is great.

We are to be His Disciples and disciple others. Jesus defines that word ‘others’ to be every nation and every people.  He doesn’t wish any should be lost. Alas, many will be.  This is because they are subject to their own lusts and destruction.

He gives us free will and the will that should be in every Christian is that we will absorb the Word of God with all our ability and prepare for His coming. We do that by being obedient to Him and becoming His Disciples. Our job of disciple-making will not be completed until every last man woman and child has heard the Good News, or he takes us home to be with him.

As for false teachers, preachers, and their anti-gospel, trust in the Holy Spirit to guide in the truth and immerse yourselves in the Word of God, observe the fruit and teachings fo those you receive nourishment from. If it doesn’t correspond to the teaching of the Holy Spirit, discard them as quickly as possible, so they may not be given the opportunity to deceive you.

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming; even now it is already in the world.

1 John 4:1-3 (CSB)

John the author of Revelations wraps up the book with these words.

He who testifies about these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”
Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with everyone. Amen.

Revelation 22:20-21 (CSB)

Time is a relative marker. All eternity is but a moment to God. We can live a lifetime in a single moment. Through the ages, His truth has been as constant as He is, and He is constant as eternity.

We are living in modern Babylon. Be alert, be aware, and be busy in preparation for the Kings Return. Even so, Lord Jesus, come!
