The robes of righteousness…

He didn’t see a reason to dress for the weather. Even though it was predicted to be going down below freezing tonight, he was only running to the store in town. The remote starter on the car assured him that the bitter cold wouldn’t be able to reach him inside the warm car. So, despite the dropping temperatures he rushed out the door and briskly scurried to the waiting car, opened the door and slid inside the driver’s seat. The door closed with a muffled thud as he checked the rear-view mirror to make sure there was nothing behind him before backing up.

The chill was almost completely gone a few miles later down the road when a deer darted out in front of his headlights. Slamming on the brakes and turning the wheel sharply to the opposite direction the deer was going, he felt the tires lose traction on the slick road surface and the car start to spin out of control. He attempted to correct the oversteer to no avail, as the vehicle continued to rotate on some wild axis that kept progressing off the road in down a fifteen-foot embankment.

Then the crash, as metal and a few strong fir trees fought for supremacy, the car lost. In the process the electrical in the car was immediately cut off as the crumpled front end of the was shifted violently to one side.

The impact of the crash had knocked him out cold and an hour or so later as he slowly woke up, cold was exactly what he felt. So cold! He took an inventory of his body as he struggled a bit to free himself from the seatbelt and push aside the deployed airbag. The technology has likely saved him from serious injury, but under that biting cold, he was experiencing he could feel the still present sting of having been impacted by a chemical blast enclosed in a canvas bag.

The door was jammed, but thankfully he could escape the vehicle through the opening where the windshield had been, apparently jettisoned in the wreck. He walked up the embankment to the roadway in the dark.

When he reached the roadside, he looked both directions intently trying to determine where the nearest refuge might be, his mind still not fully functioning to any standard of reason. The one thing he knew was that he was trembling from the cold and there were no headlights or house lights in either direction. He also realized just how stupid it was of him to leave the house without proper cover.

Grab your coat

The law, then, was our guardian until Christ, so that we could be justified by faith. But since that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for through faith you are all sons of God in Christ Jesus.

For those of you who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ. There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:24-28 (CSB)

We have entire churches that are filled with believers that fail to dress appropriately for the conditions of this world we have to go out into. They go to church, maybe even read their Bibles fairly regularly, but when it comes to going out into the world to do what they need to do they fail to put on Christ Jesus as their defense against the elements.

Yes, they may only be running to the store and back, so they don’t feel like they need the comfort and safety of the warm arms of a loving savor to protect them from the cold and darkness of sin.

But be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place and to stand before the Son of Man.

Luke 21:36 (CSB)

There are perils out in the world that are ready to do everything in their power to destroy your witness, crush your spirit, and cause you unspeakable damage.

There is hardly a believer out there that hasn’t been told about the ‘Armor of God’. Yet we go out defenseless, even though there is a dangerous and threatening foe that resides outside our sanctuary, who would savor nothing more than to tear us to shreds, given the opportunity.

Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.

1 Peter 5:8 (CSB)

We need the things that God has given us to prepare ourselves for the onslaught that we face daily. There simply isn’t a good time to find ourselves naked before the world without the coverage and protection that is afforded us in Christ Jesus.

It would be negligent for me not to remind you of the Armor of God.

Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens. For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God. Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.

Ephesians 6:10-18 (CSB)

Remember we are Christ’s representatives in this world. We need the armor he provides for every encounter, every circumstance. We never know when a deer will dart out in front of us and we find ourselves spinning out of control, profoundly impacted by the onslaught of the enemy.

Wearing the Armor of God, putting on Christ Jesus, and there is one more thing that we want always to be adorned with to keep us warm and safe in the arms of our Heavenly Father. That is the very righteousness of Jesus, the ‘Robes of Righteousness’.

I rejoice greatly in the Lord, I exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness, as a groom wears a turban and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Isaiah 61:10 (CSB)

Let’s not be naked

Let us not be naked before an angry, dying world. We have the armor and cover we need to withstand any and all circumstances that will be thrust in our path. There is no power that is greater than the power of the one who lives in the believer, trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ with all their heart.

Let’s not be ‘Naked Christians’.
