Unmerited Favor

There is no condemnation…

March 9th, 2019

The heresy of adding on to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

If we add anything to the message of Jesus, we fall into the clutches of the heretical teachings of the modern “word of faith” apostasy.

We see an old brand of false gospel spreading across the world today. It’s nothing new. Some of the faces are different than in the past. But this is the same old worthless message of the prosperity gospel, which is nothing but the revival of the heresy of the word of faith cult that turns Christianity into the same worthless ‘Man Seeks God’ religion as every other religion of the world.

The thing that distinguishes the Gospel of Jesus and separates Christianity from every other religion is the fact it isn’t a religion at all. There is Jesus who is all God and all man. Not 50/50, but 100/100. His deity isn’t diluted because he came to us to save us, he took on the form of humanity to save us from ourselves.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)

As soon as someone adds on to this truth of the scripture, you should know you are being subjected to a counter gospel that is not the Gospel of Jesus, but is a heretical aberration created by man to subject you to false teaching that depart from the glory of Christ Jesus and focuses on man making their way to god, just as every other religion does.

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

2 Timothy 3:1-7 (ESV)

Last night we had the privilege of viewing the movie American Gospel at our church. In these devotional blogs, I’ve been focused on the false gospels that abound today within what many of us consider the Body of Christ.  The reality of the situation is that these false gospels are anything but the Body of Christ but are in fact a deviation from the teachings of Jesus and a cult built on heretical distortions of the Gospel.

The link given above will take you to a full-length video of the movie American Gospel. I would encourage anyone that desires that Jesus be the Lord of their lives take the two hours and seventeen minutes needed to watch the entire video.  You can buy it on Amazon but it’s unnecessary, you can watch it for free on YouTube right now.

You need the ability to identify this false teaching because it is pervasive in the church today. Some of the biggest names you see on Christian bookstore shelves and on broadcasts have established and/or bought into this apostacy. Their mission is to subdue you and divert you from the truth of the Gospel of Jesus.

You need to be equipped to fight against this heresy and its lies.

The Lies

Here is how to identify when you are seeing the heresy of these teachings.

The Gospel is embodied in the Deity of Jesus Christ. We don’t deserve redemption. We can’t earn it by what we do or say. It is only by faith in Christ and he alone by which his grace is bestowed upon us. The Holy Spirit lives in us as an immediate and permanently sealed by the Holy Spirit.

In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 1:13-14 (ESV)

If anyone tries to tell you you have to have more faith, give more money, put forth more effort to cash in on the blessings of God they are a liar. If anyone there is anything more than our faith in the ability and willingness of Jesus in eradicating our debt of sin, it is heresy.

Paul encapsulates this perfectly…

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)

If there is any teaching that says you have to add to this to accomplish salvation, they are lying to you, or they themselves do not understand the Gospel of Jesus and the truth.

The Roman Catholic church is the biggest cult in existence! Why?

Because they teach a different form of gospel not found in the scripture. They instruct besides your faith, you need something else to bring you to favor with God. People will say well they worship the same Jesus so why is that a bad thing?

It is heretical because they insist that there is a performance requirement besides faith that results in salvation. There is only one means of salvation. It is not dependent on anything but faith that Jesus is the way by which we are saved from eternal damnation. Our faith in Jesus assures us his Grace!

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

1 Timothy 2:5-6 (ESV)

There is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”! It doesn’t require a priest’s blessing, or penitence, or anything else but faith in the redeeming power of Christ and him crucified.  Reciting five ‘Hail Mary’s will not accomplish your redemption. The redemption you seek is only through Jesus, and he is our only priest.

For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

1 Corinthians 2:2-5 (ESV)

Charlatans like Joel Osteen divert the deity of Christ and elevate the oneness of humanity and tries to convince you YOU can make YOU a better YOU, when the truth of the Gospel is that there is none worthy, not a single one of us.

as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

Romans 3:10-12 (ESV)

If you have given your life to Jesus, you have all you will get of him and his Holy Spirit. You are completed by his grace and there is nothing you can do to increase your godliness. Instead, you must decrease self and allow Jesus and his grace to be predominate in you.

We often term the Grace of Jesus Christ as “Unmerited Favor” and rightly so. For we cannot possibly earn the right, through anything we do, to lay claim to the kingdom or favor of God Almighty.

It is the grace of Jesus, given to us by faith in him, not of works. Paul says lest any of us should boast, but let’s be clear about this; lest any of us think we can add to the grace imparted to us.

It’s all about Jesus and his grace; “Unmerited Favor”!
