“This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:11-12 (ESV)
This Jesus, we deny his deity at our own peril.
Yesterday we focused in on the creation of our own version of God in the image of our desires.
How the world treats Jesus is substantially different from the reality of Jesus Christ. This statement in the book of Acts spells it out. Peter proclaims, “there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Jesus is the cornerstone of the New Covenant, rejected by humanity and put to death as the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Yet, only three days later he would rise from the grave in victory.
His sacrifice paying the debt of sin for every man, woman, and child. His resurrection, demonstrating the path to a new life in him. He did what we couldn’t do for ourselves. He is who we are to grow towards in our daily trek on the path which he establishes before us.
As we place our faith in his saving grace, we are to die to self so we may rise with him in our salvation to a new life committed to him. Jesus purchased not only our salvation he purchased our very corrupt and dying lives so he could restore us with new life in him.
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV)
There are those who today would like us to believe that we are or can be the same as Jesus. They teach that he was just a man and until God filled him with the Spirit; he did not differ from any of us. Their thinking is that as a result we can become little jesus’ with a lowercase j.
This is a complete distortion of the Word of God. When Jesus was brought into this world, he was completely God and completely man. It wasn’t a blend of man and God. Jesus is 100% God and 100% man. This means he is 200% Jesus and not 50/50; God/man.
Jesus is Lord
Fully complete in every way Jesus is The Lord of all. As we give our lives to him, we yield to him our life, our will, our determination.
Salvation is complete in him and him alone. There is no other name by which men are saved.
As he raises us in this new life, it is for a purpose. We are to serve and glorify him. Because our lives are no longer our own, they are his. We are released from the burden of sin and called a transformed mind and a new life in him.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:1-2 (ESV)
The mind body transformation is a real product of our redemption in Christ Jesus.
There is a reference that is bantered about in Christian circles that we can get our ‘ticket for heaven’ punched and go about our lives just the way we choose, and I assure you that that is a lie. Jesus doesn’t just punch our pass for heaven with the reciting of a few words.
Jesus transforms. If there isn’t a transformation, there likely isn’t any redemption taking place either. WE DIE with Christ Jesus and are RAISE to a new life in him. The old is passed away, and the new has taken hold, as we begin the transformation of our minds from the mind of sin and decay to a renewal of our minds in the image of Jesus.
Paul writes that this, “the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence
2 Peter 1:3 (ESV)
It’s not Jesus + anything. It is only by the name of Jesus that we can be saved. That salvation is a change to the human condition that is demonstrated both physically and spiritually. We will act in a different manner than we did. Our thoughts will be focused on new things as we grow in the grace and will of Jesus.
Our existence is now tied directly to Christ Jesus, and it is only through and by him we can do that which he calls us to.
It is Christ Jesus plus nothing.
He will grow our faith. He will empower through us despite our weakened condition. He fills the gap when that offering of self just isn’t enough to get the job done. Only Jesus!
In Christ alone our hope is found!
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.
These familiar words of an old hymn are the solid theology of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
If someone should tell you lack the required faith for God to act in your life, it is a lie. God doesn’t work that way. There is nothing, including mustering more and more faith we can do within our own power to cause God to act on our behalf.
It is only by the blood of God’s Son are we cleansed to be acceptable to God. Jesus provides that cleansing and it is only through him we are empowered to function in the in keeping with his commands.
It only happens when we are firmly clinging to Jesus the True Vine that we are sustained, grow, and can bear much fruit. Only Jesus!
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.”
John 15:1-4 (ESV)
The false gospels that exist out there want to tell you that you need Jesus plus something to secure your salvation.
If you don’t speak in tongues, you aren’t filled with the Holy Spirit or you aren’t filled as much as those who do. If you don’t perform certain duties, then your salvation is not complete. If you don’t go to the right place of worship, possess the right things, and practice the rituals, you are doomed. All LIES!
It’s “Only Jesus” that saves.
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5 (ESV)
“With his wounds we are healed.” When Jesus was hanging on the cross and he uttered the words “It is finished”, he was talking about the task for which he had committed himself to redeem creation for his own. It was finished. It is complete. Our salvation has been purchased and the one who paid that debt is “Only Jesus” and nothing else!
By the Grace of Jesus,
