Things to consider…
June 15th, 2019
We can change the world around us, change ourselves in moments. We can do so by following a few simple directives that have been outlined for us in the Book of Philippians.
True, respectable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy are the things that we should focus on.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things.
Philippians 4:8 (NET)
It’s one of those simple verses that we enjoy, sing songs about it, but seldom take real seriously.
Have you ever really considered what practicing these things will do for you, your home life, job, church, and your relationship with God!
Set them apart in the truth; your word is truth.
John 17:17 (NET)
Jesus praying for us, his disciples, point to that which is truth above all truth. God’s Word. He desires for us to be set apart by our exposure to the truth of the Word and to live the content of the Word as the very affirmation of our lives.
If we are thinking about the Word of God, we can’t be brought down by anything. His Word in us and on our lips is undisputedly the most powerful weapon in our arsenal in the spiritual battles we engage in day by day.
If we consider truth, the impact it has on ourselves and everyone coming in contact with us will be profound, God’s Word leaves no room for ambiguity.
Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another. Do not lag in zeal, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, endure in suffering, persist in prayer.
Romans 12:10-13 (NET)
Respect is honored by the Lord so much. He expects us to respect each other, our churches, our nation’s leaders, and above all else, God himself. If you consider the way God calls us to treat our enemies, we are to have a measure of respect for them too.
There is a saying that if you want respect give respect. It’s a true enough saying (there is truth again), and if we are the ones to initiate respect for others, we are going to see that respect coming back to us.
Respect of the highest order, is when we respect God’s authority, among all the other attributes in which God consistently overwhelms our minimal imitations of him.
It is terrible to show partiality to the wicked, by depriving a righteous man of justice.
Proverbs 18:5 (NET)
God disdains injustice above all else. His very nature demands that he is just and even through he’s got love abundant and free; he will deal with those who refuse his Grace with as a matter of course.
His expectation is that those who follow him, act justly and seek justice at all times.
All is pure to those who are pure. But to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their minds and consciences are corrupted.
Titus 1:15 (NET)
Talk about a real attitude adjustment. If we allow God to purify us and then consistently seek his repeated purity in our lives, it alters our entire outlook. That purity extends beyond our reach, to set our stage regardless of the trials and tribulations that we may face. The opposite is true as well, (there is that truth thing again) those who are corrupt, the more corrupt they are, the more they see everything around them as being corrupt.
The Love Chapter in 1st Corinthians 13, speaks to volumes about what is lovely and loves power in our lives, coupled with these other things we have already covered and that which we are going to consider. Love is a catalyst for so much of the best things in life. This is only natural because God IS LOVE! We should be loving too and should be loving the Lovely.
Love is also something that endures too!
And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NET)
Accommodation is such a powerful thing in the giving and receiving both. Commendable really doesn’t even approach what this simple grace imparts to all in its grasp. Grace as a matter of fact is likely the most commendable thing there is.
Showing yourself to be an example of good works in every way. In your teaching show integrity, dignity, and a sound message that cannot be criticized, so that any opponent will be at a loss, because he has nothing evil to say about us.
Titus 2:7-8 (NET)
We all probably don’t think much about the linkage of presenting all we do all around with excellence. The enemy would like nothing more than to defeat us by convincing us that ‘Good Enough’ is just that, good enough!
I will tell of the faithful acts of the Lord, of the Lordʼs praiseworthy deeds. I will tell about all the Lord did for us, the many good things he did for the family of Israel, because of his compassion and great faithfulness.
Isaiah 63:7 (NET)
Again, focus is back on the Lord and his praiseworthy deeds. Praise worthy means we are going to feel compelled to be thankful for the things that he gives us on a constant basis.
If we can do these things an pursue them with enthusiasm, we will see a change in ourselves and everyone around us, “Whatever!”
In the Grace of Jesus!
