You may have noticed a sequence of devotionals that are national issues, our loyalties, etc. I suppose if you are going to write about such things, doing so in early July is as good of time as any to do so.
As much as I love this country I was born in, I have begun to wonder just what the future of this nation is.
There is no doubt in my mind that God’s hand has been on this country, blessing it and its citizenry with bounty beyond description. God has blessed those who blessed this country too. When I consider this country from strictly a view point of the blessings that have flowed to and through the United States, it reminds me of a scripture that was penned for another nation.
Then I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, so that you will exemplify divine blessing. I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name.”
Genesis 12:2-3 (NET)
If you didn’t know better, you’d swear this passage was written to the founding fathers of the USA. It was not. It was written for Abraham before God changed his name, promising to establish his lineage as a great nation.
The reason why this aligns so well with the history of the United States, is that while the Children of Israel is God’s chosen people, God’s doesn’t restrict his blessings to any particular people, especially when those people honor him with their devotion.
For there is no distinction between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, who richly blesses all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Romans 10:12-13 (NET)
God has and continues to consistently respond to a people focused on fulfilling his will.
For many years, from its beginnings, God has blessed the United States of America.
The thing that troubles me is I wonder if that blessing has been lifted. I am deeply concerned that we, as a people, may have strayed too far from God to ever recover. Many feel that God is pronouncing judgment on the USA right now.
Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity, to dishonor their bodies among themselves. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
Romans 1:24-25 (NET)
To significant things determine when God has given up on a people. First we see in this passage in Romans that he gives them up to their hearts desire for impurity. Sexual deviance has become mainstreamed today. Next, we see them extchaning the truth of God for a lie which they in turn worship.
When got throws in the towel on a people, he typically doesn’t call down fire from the heavens and consume them as he did with Sodom and Gomorrah. More commonly he turns his back on them and leaves them to their own devices.
He did this time and time again with the nation of Israel. It was only his grace and love for these people that caused him to persist in redeeming them and drawing them back to himself.
WE are not in the same position as the descendents of Abraham were. We don’t have a national covenant to rely on God’s continued blessings to sustain us.
If we turn our back on God, he will turn his back on us and leave us to our own corruption and debase behavior.
I believe without a doubt that this has already taken place. We murder more children per capita of any nation on the planet. We have loosen the bond of marriage and called for a sexual revolution that has metamorphosed into the acceptance homosexuality to the point where marriage is no long a sacred bond between God and a man and a woman but a social contract between parties that choose to establish a legal comingling of domicile. Finally, truth has been redefined as whatever you want it to be.
Is it too late?
That’s difficult for us to say. The answer to that lay in each of our hands and is out of our control. This is a sad commentary. But what I’m trying to relate to you is that we have gone too far, we have passed the boundary of safety and are now perched on the abyss of destruction as a nation and as a people.
What can turn the tide?
if my people, who belong to me, humble themselves, pray, seek to please me, and repudiate their sinful practices, then I will respond from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 (NET)
We can. This passage in Second Chronicles was not talking about us, but as we have already discussed, God doesn’t make a distinction between peoples based on nationality. He distinguishes between them by their hearts.
If the heart of this nation can surrender itself collectively to God, then yes there is a means to turn the tide and it is not too late.
But this kind of revival has to start in our hearts and our churches. It must be widespread and in earnest. There is no time to doddle, each and every believer must become a disciple and proclaim the Good News to all, praying for a miracle of rebirth of a nation under god. Else, this nation will be a nation under God’s wrath and final judgement. Total and complete separation from the love they have lost.
“One Nation” under God, or judgment? It begins with you!
In the Grace of Jesus!
